Night March to Gettysburg by Jerry Ernst
Reviewer: Jane Ellen
Night March to Gettysburg is another impeccably researched album by music historian and Civil War reenactor Jerry Ernst. Although the project began as an attempt to document the music of the 140th New York Volunteers, the result is a compilation of the music experienced by the average soldier. From the lesser-known "Eulalie" by Stephen Foster and the haunting Scots ballad "Annie Laurie," to the rousing strains of "300,000 More" and "Rally Round the Flag," this CD documents the wildly swinging emotions of the soldier in the field far from home. As such, it is my favourite album by Ernst. If you're looking to experience the sounds of life during this tumultuous period in American history, you couldn't purchase a finer all-around album.
