While not strictly programmatic, Mauldin's tone poems invoke the subject matter and bring it to life for the listener. Through lush and rich orchestrations he has managed to create virtual soundtracks; you will find yourself checking the jacket to be sure that none of the pieces was used in the cinema. Each of the five works on this CD portrays a different aspect of Mauldin's love affair with the state of New Mexico and his ongoing search for "the space, the light, and the timelessness" of the region. As a composer, Mauldin deserves far more national attention than he has received; hopefully, the distribution of these works will introduce his music to a wider audience.
