Douglas John Glover, US Army

History of Douglas John Glover

Sergeant 1st Class
Special Forces, U.S. Army
by his mother, Lulu Glover

This undated article was contributed by Doug's nephew Terry.

Douglas was born on May 2, 1943 at Cortland, New York, son of Harry James and Lulu May Glover; he has two brothers and one sister, older than he by eleven years and have families of their own; he married Rosemarie Carr in November 1964 and they have one son, John Michael; she is going to college and Michael is in second grade.

Doug graduated from St. Mary's High School and enjoyed being on the football squad; he loved horses and was a good rider - he spent six years in riding club starting when he was twelve years old.

He entered Military Service on October 1, 1962 and had his basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky; then he served three years at Arlington, Virginia (Fort Myer) where he was assigned to the 3d Infantry, Caisson Unit; he loved caring for the horses and riding them; while there he participated in both the funeral processions of President Kennedy and General Douglas MacArthur.

He re-enlisted October 1, 1965 and trained for Special Forces at Fort Bragg, N.C. (the Home Base), at Dahlonga, Ga., and Key West, Fla., and at Fort Greeley, Alaska. He was sent to Vietnam as Green Beret in September 1967; was wounded in the right arm in October 1967 while riding in a helicopter; he was shot down in a helicopter while on a mission over Laos on February 19, 1968. Nothing has been heard from him since and he is still on the 'Missing in Action' list.

There is only a thin ray of hope that he is still alive and only a miracle will ever bring him home again. Until the summer of 1973 his case was "Classified" and the Army did not tell us where he went down; then they de-classified the incident and sent us a map of the territory; he and several others in similar circumstances were promoted a grade higher in June 1973, which makes him a Sergeant 1st Class instead of Staff Sergeant.

There are more than 150 citizens that we know of who are wearing his bracelet and all of these people have sent very kind letters.

May the Good Lord have Blessings on All of You.
