January 2003: I received an email from Jim Kreutz (Major USA, Ret.) which provides some information about this photo of Doug. His comments are reprinted here with his kind permission:
"I flew gunships for the 189th Assault Helicopter Company that supported Doug's organization Command & Control Central. Although not close friends I knew Doug and flew gun cover for his teams on several missions. Our nick-name for him was 'Elephant Boy' because he supposedly got his foot stepped on by an elephant while on a mission. I believe the picture of him in front of the vehicle with what appears to be a cast on his left foot was after the elephant incident."
Doug in Vietnam, 1967-1968
Both photos were given to Doug's brother Doyle by John Plaster, who used them in his books SOG and SOG: A Photo History of The Secret Wars. The jeep photo was originally provided by Gene McCarley.
