Dragon Dream
by Ann Cragg
An ancient legend, so we were told,
Promises true love coming soon
To one who sees a dragon flying
Across the face of a full moon.
"Could this really be true?" she wondered.
I answered that I did not know;
Perhaps 'twas nothing more than a myth
Dreamed up by someone long ago.
That was last month. Last week she called me
To say the promise had been true.
"There are no dragons today," I said,
"So how could one be seen by you?"
She'd seen it in her sleep, she said now,
Silhouetted against the moon --
So beautiful, so clear, that she knew
Her true love would be coming soon.
"But that was only a dream!" I cried,
"The legend spoke of a real one!"
It was real, she said, as real as I!
And the conversation was done.
Today I preceded her down the aisle
With bridesmaid's flowers and wedding ring;
She married a tall, dark, handsome man
Whose smile makes your heart want to sing.
I'd argued that, "It is much too soon!
Are you sure he really loves you?"
She'd seen the dragon, again she said,
So she knew this man's love was true.
Was her dream the result of desire
For the love she'd not found thus far?
Or did it only seem real to her,
As to a child, wishing on a star?
Or could it have seemed but a dream to her mind
When she had awakened too soon?
Had she really seen, in some strange way,
A dragon fly past a full moon?
